Again and again, this hike offers beautiful views of the Swabian Alb and the villages of Feckenhausen and Zepfenhan. Zepfenhan will surprise you with its airfield for sports planes and small aeroplanes. At the Eckerwald memorial site, the impressive sculpture by Rottweiler sculptor Siegfried Haas is a reminder of the dark past. This was the site of the "Wüste 10" camp, a branch of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp. Thousands of concentration camp prisoners were forced to mine the oil shale found in the rock strata of the Black Jura for the Nazi regime under inhumane conditions. The concentration camp cemetery in neighbouring Schömberg is a silent witness to this unfortunate time.
