Pilgrimage routes

Since old, Rottweil has been on the route of pilgrims from all over the world. In archaeological excavations, a scallop shell was found that presumably dates back to the 12th century. The Heilig-Kreuz Cathedral likewise houses evidence of the worship to St. James, the patron of all hikers and pilgrims. The historic Rottweil hospital (the building today houses a retirement home) used to cater for pilgrims passing through the town. Baden-Württemberg’s oldest town is the crossroads of four pilgrimage routes.
